Happy happy October! It’s crazy how fast September went by, I feel like I just got back from my summer cabin a week ago. Although this is a fashion personal style blog, I also have a major obsession with makeup. I like to call myself a YouTube taught makeup enthusiast. On a daily basis I watch at least an hour of YouTube makeup videos; you could say I’m mildly obsessed. I love watching Youtubers tastes and abilities evolve over time and I love the the interactive aspect of using social platforms such as YouTube and Instagram.
Every few months for the past two years I focus on trying to evolve a certain skill set of my own. It started with perfecting my foundation routine, then my contour and highlighting abilities and now for the past eight months I’ve been focused on eyes. I’ve been trying multiple eye looks, struggling to perfect winged liner and striving to not get glue in my eyes when I put on lashes. This past month I’ve collected and tried a crap ton of new makeup! So what a better way to end the month of September then with a products review post. If you’re not interested in these products or you don’t like makeup, no worries I will be back to fashion soon enough!
Disclaimer: As I’ve never been professionally trained and don’t do this for a living take my perspective and reviews as someone who is just a regular gal like you! Also I have fair skin that is quite dry, so my opinions and experiences may be different then yours.
Smashbox Liquid Lipstick “Always On” – I LOVE these liquid lipsticks! I have very dry lips so liquid lippies tend to crack or dry my lips out further but these Smashbox ones are creamy, pigmented and apply beautifully. This shade is the perfect mauve dusty rose neutral; which are the colours I tend to be drawn to, especially in the fall. Right now they have 20 shades, most of them ranging in the reds to pinks and few deep purple/brown colours. I hope that they bring out out more neutral nude shades in the future as this is just an amazing formula. It’s kiss proof and feels fantastic all day! What more could you ask for? I give this product an A+, slay girl, slay.
Wet n Wild Lipstick “Bare it all” & “Mocha – Hearing from various beauty YouTubers that these lipsticks are a great product for their price ($3), it immediately made me want to try them. Who can resist such a good price? I did enjoy the pigmentation and the colour selection but unfortunately I have really really dry lips and these dry the hell out of them further. If I apply a chapstick before the lipstick and after using it then I can get away with wearing them but its kind of a process for them to feel good. Maybe my lips are just struggling right now and when they’re less dry it will be better fit but I have to give these lipsticks a solid C in my book. I’d rather spend a little more money and get a product that feels nice on my lips. Ya feel me?
Kylie Cosmetics “The Bronze” Palette – I’m clearly not the first to talk about this palette, nor will I be the last but damn Kylie these colours are bomb. I literally use this palette daily, they are just such wearable and versatile colours. Also how can you not DIE over this packaging? My top three favourite colours are Quartz (classic champagne pink shimmer), Citrine (orangey tangerine matte) and Tigers Eye ( warm toned medium brown). Currently i’m obsessed with wearing a warm toned bronzy orange eye with a little shimmer on the brow bone, it’s just the perfect fall eye look to compliment all the warm toned tobacco browns and forest greens we’re seeing this season in fashion. The shadows do give off a small amount of kick up but if you consider your paying roughly 5 USD a shadow the pigmentation and quality are actually quite good. While apply these shadows I’ve had no problems blending them out or building up the pigment on my eyes. I give this product a solid A in my book.
Urban Decay “Razor Sharp” Liquid Eyeliner in “Snakebite” – This eyeliner is the perfect reflective bronze colour. I purchased it for those eye looks when I want eyeliner but not a harsh black line. This liner adds a little glam with the reflectiveness but is soft enough not to over power the bronzy orange eye look I love doing. You get 0.07 fluid oz and it comes in this beautiful brown bronze packaging just like the colour of the liner inside. The tip of the liner is a very thin brush hair that can create this perfect thin winged line or can build up the product to get a thick line look as well. The one thing I will point out is I tried to use this on a predominantly dark brown eye look and the colour didn’t really show up on the dark eye shadow but it did accentuate my eye it was just very subtle. I give this product a B+, as I haven’t had the opportunity to compare this type of liner to a similar one but that said I really like it and I use it quite often.
L’Oréal Paris “Infallible Pro-Matte” – To be honest I’m not usually a drugstore foundation person but I wanted to try this foundation because i’ve heard amazing things about it from Youtubers and friends alike. This is a demi-matte finish intended to last 24 hours with an air-light texture on the face. I agree 100% with the air-light texture claim, once this foundation was on my face I couldn’t even tell it was there and it gave a very natural skin finish look not too matte and not shiny, just perfect. I did find it hard to match a shade to skin undertone but that could have been due to the selection provided by my drugstore, i’m not 100% sure but I ended up with a colour that was too pink of an undertone for me. Although it was not the right colour I like how the product blended into my skin and didn’t accentuate any pores or fine lines, it created a beautiful medium coverage for an affordable price. I give this product a B+.
Physicians Formula “Butter Bronzer” – This bronzer smells AH-MAZING truly like vacation in compact. If you’re looking for a good price point bronzer brand, Physicians Formula is great they offer so many shades and levels of intensity. This is the bronzer I use when I’m really pale in the winter and I want just a nice soft glow. This product isn’t as pigmented as their other bronzers so when I’m a ghost it just gives a little definition to hollows on face. Usually if I want an intense contour I use my Kat Von D contour kit and then go in with this just to warm up the cool undertones of the contour, such a good combo! I give this product an B+ in my book.
Milani Baked Blush “Luminoso” – I am completely in love with this blush, originally I purchased this because of the fantastic review Jaclyn Hill gave it and boy was she ever spot on! This baked blush is the perfect colour, it gives you this soft warm pink colour without being over powering. The texture is smooth, which allows the blush to apply evenly and beautifully on your cheek. I also find the blush doesn’t give me one solid pink colour on my skin but instead it radiates this beautiful illuminated pink colour, just helping to bring some life into my cheeks after I put on my foundation. I give this product an A in my book.
Wet n Wild Colouricon blush “Pearlescent Pink” – This blush O-M-G its a beautiful light pearlescent pink with the very very tiniest hint of gold in it, which just gives your cheeks this lovely flushed lit from within look. This formula is soft and applies evenly across the apples of my cheeks. Make sure to use a light hand, this colour has the ability to build up into a more intense look that can come off as clownish if you apply multiple layers. The colour and reflectiveness of this blush reminds me a lot of Nars “Orgasm” or “Deep Throat”, it’s just as beautiful but a fraction of the cost! This is an ultimate drugstore steal, you need this blush in your life, right now. I give this product an A+ in my book, you go Glen Coco.
Milk Makeup Highlighter “Lit” – When I ordered this product off their website I really really wanted to like it, I had the highest of hopes and was let down. Milk Makeup is a fun eco-concious brand that designs multi-purpose make-up products for women on the go. This highlighter is a champagne gold, cream base highlighter. It gives off a very soft and natural ‘lit from within’ glow. The issue I had with this product is that when I apply this over top of my foundation it can tend to either remove the foundation below or the product becomes patchy across the tops of my cheek bones when it’s applied on top of other products. Based on this I give this product an solid C+ in my book. It’s a little too much work to order online and then once you get it you have to use another product (powder highlighter) on top of it to really get it to POP like you want a highlighting product to do. I would maybe try another cream highlighter to see if you even like them before going out of your way to order this one.
NYX “Strobe of Genius” Illuminating Palette – This highlighting/strobing palette from NYX is wonderful, you get 7 highlighting colours ranging from a pretty champagne/white, yellow/gold, bronze/pink and icy/purple. For the very affordable price tag that is attached to this product I think it does a beautiful job on the skin. I find the texture to be slightly more powdery then say Becca Cosmetics highlighters but they are similar in smoothness and texture, I would say that a few colours in the NYX palette have a slightly rougher glitter feel IF you want to get into the nitty gritty. In the NYX palette you get 0.21 oz of product distributed between 7 pans. It applies smooth on the skin and gives you the perfect “cut a bitch” glow that we all want out of intense highlighters. I like to use Milk Makeup cream highlighter first and then set it with the NYX powders and holy crap do I shine like the damn sun. I give this product an A+, great price, great sized pans and good product.
